Development of an automatic lightning localization system SCALAR started in 1997 in Milan Vidmar Power Research Institute in Ljubljana, with placing two sensors in Slovenia and software development. The system detects cloud to ground and intercloud lightning.
important breaking point of SCALAR system was in 2008, with expansion of the system and installation additional sensors in western Balkan region. Today the SCALAR system consist of more then ten sensors in Slovenia and the western Balkan and include a lot of advanced technological software and service solutions.
