mobile real-time rainfall and lightning activity monitoring
mScalar is a service, designed for broad variety of users, who need current, fresh information about weather conditions in Slovenia at hand, anywhere on the GSM signal covered area.

It is an application, which runs in Java MicroEdition environment. It provides mobile, real-time rainfall and lightning activity monitoring on wide area of Slovenia. It also includes three hour animation of weather conditions, thus enabling user to predict rainfall position in future.

Animation makes it possible to overview rainfall direction. With this information, outdoor activities can be planned and adjusted to current weather state. For example, cycling, mountaineering and also long car drives in heavy thunderstorm can be avoided if you are timely informed about storm coming near planned way.

Information about lightning activity has similar safety, preventive advantages, especially for areas and people that are imposed to high risks of lightning damages. For example, maintenance workers (overhead wires, civil engineering), and also free-time users (sportsmen, mountaineers). It is well-known that in summertime, highlands are endangered by lightning damage, as are also overhead wires due to its high and exposed construction.

Static Animation

Animation displays weather state by showing radar images in chronological order. Each image includes lightning stroke position marks. All images are resized according to mobile phone screen resolution.
Legend Radar image is a map of Slovenia, on which is presented the following information:
  • position and intensity of rainfall in casts of blue color (see legend). The darker the blue color is, the more intense the rainfall is.
  • lightning stroke position marks in square or point shape. Marks are colored according to lightning stroke time from true red (stroke happened at least five and at most six hours ago) through orange casts to true yellow color, which means that stroke happened at most one hour ago (see legend).
Two view modes are available:
  • STATIC with zoom function: firstly, the most recent radar image with lightning stroke marks for last six hours is presented. Lightning strokes are colored according to time legend. Radar image has rainfall intensity legend included in top right corner. Also the time of radar measurement is labeled in left top corner.
  • ANIMATION: application presents radar images for last three hours in chronological order. Each radar image corresponds to ten minute interval; that is the time, needed to complete radar measurement (more information about rainfall radar can be found here). For each interval, radar image includes lightning marks, for strokes that happened in corresponding time period, colored according to time legend.
