Overview of SCALAR system

Slovenian center for automatic localization of atmospheric discharges (SCALAR) is based on its network of four sensors. For unambiguous lightning localization, at least four sensors are required. For this reason, SCALAR lightning localization system is connected into EUCLID network. By connecting many sensor networks, operational costs are reduced and reliability, precision and efficiency increased.

Schematic overview of whole SCALAR system is presented in image 2. Incorporation of SCALAR system in EUCLID network has improved system accuracy to the range of ± 500 m and its efficiency has increased over 80 %.

LPATS III sensor

All sensors are synchronized with navigation satellite, which provides sensor's clock accuracy of ± 300 ns. When using only time-of-arrival algorithm, this error would provide location error of approximately ± 90 m. Total measurement error by time method, which includes also wave deformation due to earth propagation equals ± 1ms. This causes location error of ± 300 m. The data about lightning detections is sent to modem over RS232 connection and then through phone line to terminal server.

TERMINAL SERVER

Its task is to forward RS232 data to specified TCP port.

CP8000 POSITION ANALYZER

CP8000 is connected to EIMV's terminal server through TCP/IP protocol. In this way, data transfer from sensors to the position analyzer is complete. Besides the data from SCALAR sensors, position analyzer also gets data from Austrian IMPACT sensors through X.25 protocol. After collecting all flash data, CP8000 calculates location and other flash parameters. Results are available on specific TCP port for user server to read.

USER SERVER

User server has three tasks:

  • It connect to position analyzer in Vienna through TCP/IP protocol and receives flash data about strokes, detected in Slovenia. All received data is immediately saved in SQL database on server, where lightning data archive is located.
  • It dispatches lightning data to users of SCALAR system services in real time.
  • It responds to SQL requests committed by users.
Server was developed by EIMV.

SQL SERVER

SQL server is multi-user data server, which processes SQL requests for data queries, insertion or replacement. Server is able to process more users and queries at the same time and uses JDBC or ODBC drivers. Databases, maintained by SQL server are:

  • atmospheric discharges,
  • geographic data,
  • user data,
  • event data.
SQL server also uses TCP/IP protocol for data transmission. With ODBC drivers, Windows-environment tools for relation databases are possible to use.
